Our Oakton team at R3 Stem Cell offers stem cell therapy, exosomes, and platelet rich plasma within the wider field of regenerative medicine. We use Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for knee, hip, shoulder, and back discomfort.
Non-surgical care for knees, hips, shoulders, and low backs that no longer keep up with you. Serving Oakton and Fairfax County.
Sitting in traffic on I-66 should not be the most painful part of your day. If your knee stiffens up after twenty minutes in the car, or your shoulder wakes you at 2 a.m., you have probably already been told to rest it and take something for the swelling. R3 Stem Cell helps Oakton patients look at what comes next, including stem cell therapy, exosome therapy, and PRP injections.
Pain rarely announces itself. It creeps. First you skip the last mile of your walk. Then you take the stairs at Vienna Metro one at a time. Then you catch yourself planning your weekend around whether your hip will cooperate.
By the time most Oakton patients call us, they have been through the whole routine. Ice. Ibuprofen. A steroid injection that helped for about two months. Physical therapy that worked until work got in the way. Eventually an orthopedic surgeon mentions replacement surgery, and the math gets real fast: weeks off, a rehab schedule, and no driving for a while in a county where everything requires driving.
Regenerative medicine sits in that middle space. It is not a miracle and we will never sell it that way. It is a legitimate option worth understanding before you sign consent forms for an operating room.

Stem cell therapy places concentrated cells or cell signals near damaged tissue to support your body’s own repair activity. The workhorse cells for orthopedic use are mesenchymal stem cells, or MSCs.
R3 network providers use a few different stem cell treatment options depending on your imaging and your goals:
Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells (UC-MSCs), including tissue known as “Wharton’s jelly,” from screened donors after healthy full-term deliveries
Your own cells, drawn from bone marrow or fat tissue during the same visit
Exosome therapy, which delivers the messenger packets cells use to signal each other
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, made from a small sample of your own blood
Most of these take under an hour. They are outpatient injections, usually guided by ultrasound, and you go home the same day. No general anesthesia. No hospital stay.
Knees come first, by a lot, usually knee arthritis or a ligament injury that never fully settled. Then low back pain and hip arthritis, then shoulders, including rotator cuff tears, then the smaller joints people forget about until they hurt: hands, wrists, elbows, necks, feet, and ankles. Runners and tennis players ask about tendonitis and partial tears. Parents in their fifties ask a simpler question, which is how to get through a full Saturday of yard work without paying for it Sunday.
We also field calls about nerve pain and numbness in the feet and hands, circulation concerns, hair thinning, skin restoration, and general anti-aging and orthopedic regenerative care.
Some callers have neurologic, autoimmune, respiratory, or cardiac diagnoses and want to know whether cellular therapies apply to them. Our honest answer depends entirely on the diagnosis, and for several of those conditions the real evidence still lives inside clinical trials, not private clinics.
Here is the part we would want a family member to hear.
Human cell and tissue products in the United States are FDA-regulated. Full FDA licensure currently applies only to blood-forming cell products from cord blood used for specific blood disorders. Orthopedic and IV cellular therapies sit outside that, offered as investigational or minimally manipulated tissue care. Any clinic in Northern Virginia telling you the injection itself carries federal approval is misleading you, and you should walk.
What you should get instead: consent documents written in plain English, donor-screened tissue from an ISO and cGMP-certified lab, documented cell counts and viability for your specific vial, and a physician willing to say NO when you are not a good fit. Our commitment to every therapy patient covers all of it in writing.
Side effects are usually mild. Soreness at the site, some swelling, bruising, and a brief pain flare in the first few days are the common ones. Infection and immune reaction are uncommon but possible with any injection.

First, insurance. Fairfax County has one of the highest concentrations of federal employees and contractors in the country, and Federal Employees Health Benefits plans exclude services classified as experimental or investigational. That is exactly how orthopedic cellular therapy is classified. Read your plan brochure before you assume coverage, because almost nobody gets reimbursed for this.
Second, trials. The NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda is roughly a 45-minute drive from Oakton, and searchable federal trial listings often include regenerative studies within reach of Northern Virginia. If a trial fits your condition better than a paid procedure, we would rather tell you that. You can also review the published research behind R3 protocols before your consult.
Stem cell therapy in the Oakton and Northern Virginia area generally runs $3,500 to $15,000. The range depends on cell source, how many areas get treated, and whether your plan includes follow-up exosome or PRP sessions. One knee sits at the low end. Multi-joint or intravenous protocols sit higher.
Financing through third-party medical lenders is available, and your consultation comes with a written quote. No surprise line items later.
We do NOT print a single success rate here. Outcomes shift too much with joint, age, remaining cartilage, weight, and activity level for one number to mean anything honest. Verified Oakton-specific outcome data does not exist, and we will not manufacture it. What your provider can offer is a realistic read on your imaging, plus real patient success stories from people who started where you are.
R3 has coordinated regenerative procedures across a national provider network for years. That matters because tissue sourcing, lab standards, and consent practices stay the same regardless of which clinic you visit. See what sets R3 apart from other stem cell clinics if you are comparing options. Our coordinators handle records, confirm your closest treatment center and drive time, and book the consultation.
Oakton itself is about 37,000 residents inside ZIP 22124, with a median age near 38 according to the 2020 census, and a median household income above $160,000. Translation: a lot of working professionals in their forties and fifties who cannot afford eight weeks of recovery and are looking for something between pills and surgery.
Bring your questions, your MRI report if you have one, and what you actually want to get back to doing. We will tell you whether stem cell treatment fits your situation, and we will say so plainly if it does not.

Yes. Licensed physicians in Virginia may offer cellular therapies under federal FDA rules governing human cells and tissues. These products are FDA-regulated but are not approved drugs for orthopedic or systemic use, so they are provided as investigational or minimally manipulated tissue care with written informed consent before treatment.
Almost never. Federal Employees Health Benefits plans, common across Fairfax County, exclude services classified as experimental or investigational, which is how orthopedic cellular therapy is currently categorized. Most commercial plans apply the same exclusion. Expect to pay out of pocket or use third-party medical financing.
Typical pricing in Northern Virginia runs $3,500 to $15,000. Cost depends on cell source, the number of joints treated, and whether exosome or PRP follow-up sessions are included. A single knee sits at the low end. Intravenous or multi-joint protocols cost more.
PRP concentrates platelets from your own blood to deliver growth factors. Stem cell injections use mesenchymal cells from umbilical cord tissue, bone marrow, or fat. PRP costs less and suits earlier-stage injuries. Cell-based options are usually chosen for more advanced cartilage wear or repeated treatment failures.
Most patients describe gradual change across four to twelve weeks rather than immediate relief. Mild soreness and swelling in the first few days are expected. Some providers schedule a second injection around eight to twelve weeks. Response varies by joint, age, remaining cartilage, weight, and activity level.
