23 Apr Latest on Stem Cells for Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease that falls under the umbrella of IBD, which is inflammatory bowel disease. Over half of individuals with UC, unfortunately, fail traditional treatment options, including the latest available biologic. This may lead to increased, abdominal pain, bowel movement, frequency, blood in the stool with an eventual risk of colonectomy and possibly colorectal carcinoma.

A recent study evaluated umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell treatment prospectively in 41 patients with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis had failed conventional medications. The participants each received two intravenous infusions, one per month, at a dose of 1 million stem cells per kilogram each time.
Attempts were made to wean the participants off of prednisone after treatment was concluded. At the two months point, 3/4 of the participants achieved a significant clinical response with 42% being in complete remission. 44% had mucosal healing noticed with endoscopy.
At six months , an incredible 58% were in complete remission with additional mucosal healing noticed on endoscopy. Clinical responses included decreased abdominal pain, decreased bowel movement frequency and less bloody purulent stools. On endoscopy the doctors noted less inflammation throughout the colon along with mucosal healing, which indicated remission of the disease.

The adverse events noted were minor to moderate and included, low-grade fever, fatigue, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. These resolved within a day with simply supportive treatments.
The authors of the study looked at biomarkers in the blood, indicating premature cellular senescence in the participants. After treatment with the umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells, there were significant improvements in the bio markers with suppression of pro inflammatory cytokines. The conclusion of the authors is that umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell therapy is not only safe and feasible for ulcerative colitis patients, but also very effective at helping put patients into remission, reducing symptoms, promoting mucosal healing, and preventing significant complications.
