Sam Alvey is an American mixed martial artist who has competed primarily in the UFC’s middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. Born on May 6, 1986, in Waterloo, Iowa, Alvey is instantly recognizable for his trademark perpetual smile, which he maintains even during intense fights, earning him the nickname “Smilin’ Sam.”

Alvey made his UFC debut in 2014 after competing in various regional promotions including Bellator and Strikeforce. Throughout his career, he became known for his knockout power, durable chin, and entertaining fighting style. He achieved several performance bonuses for his exciting finishes and demonstrated versatility by competing successfully in both the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions.

 

Sam’s MMA career record is 34-18 with 20 KO’s. In 2023, Sam became the inaugural World Heavyweight Champion of Karate Combat and held the title for 2 years.

 

Beyond his fighting abilities, Alvey developed a reputation as one of the sport’s most personable fighters. His consistently positive attitude and approachable demeanor made him a fan favorite. He was also outspoken on various issues affecting fighters and became known for his willingness to take short-notice fights, establishing himself as a reliable veteran presence on the UFC roster.

 

After a lengthy tenure with the UFC, Alvey continued his MMA career, cementing his legacy as a memorable personality and tough competitor in the sport.
