Stem Cell Therapy for Hip, Knee, Shoulder Arthritis in Pakistan - Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi, Lahore

Arthritis is a condition caused by the inflammation of joints. As arthritis progresses, joints can become increasingly damaged. Over time, this can lead to a decrease in an individual’s range of motion and quality of life.

Arthritis is often difficult to treat, and many of the most common treatments involve the use of medication. While medication may help to improve symptoms, it does little to address the root cause of the issue. Researchers are beginning to look at the use of stem cell therapy for treating hip and shoulder arthritis.

How Arthritis Affects the Body

As we grow older, our body is subject to more wear and tear. Over time, the continual pressure on our bones and joints can damage the connective tissue and cartilage. When this tissue and cartilage become inflamed, we experience pain and a decrease in our range of motion.

Current treatments for arthritis involve the use of painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication as well as changes in lifestyle to reduce swelling and pain. While these options may help to improve the quality of life, they do not heal the condition.

Using Stem Cells for Arthritis

Stem cells have a number of interesting attributes that make them useful for people who want to treat arthritis. Two of the most useful attributes are:

  • The ability of stem cells to adopt the role of different cells. Stem cells, on their own, serve no function – but once they are exposed to other cells, they can replicate their function.
  • Stem cells have the ability to divide and reproduce. This means that they can adopt the role of specific cells and then reproduce, which allows them to repair joints and bones that are damaged.

The idea here is that stem cells can replicate the function of damaged cells in the joints of arthritic patients. By implanting stem cells into damaged cartilage, stem cells can assume the function of the cartilage, begin reproducing and replace the damaged cartilage with new, healthy cartilage.

The Stem Cell Process

Stem cell therapy can be provided for arthritic patients in one of two ways.

  • Stem cells can be implanted during the surgery of an arthritic joint. This allows the surgeon to easily add stem cells into the damaged cartilage.
  • Stem cells can also be injected directly into the arthritic joint. This allows the stem cells to begin reproducing without the need for surgery. In this case, doctors will make use of medical imaging to ensure that the stem cells are delivered properly to the problem area.

Stem cell therapy has been used in a number of studies for the treatment of one particular type of arthritis known as rheumatoid arthritis. During this study, published in the Journal of Rheumatology in 2004, had patients receiving stem cell injections directly into their joints.

A number of other studies have been done on the use of stem cell therapy for treating osteoarthritis. Stem cell therapy, especially when combined with an alternative therapy known as platelet-rich plasma therapy, can help to reduce pain and inflammation in the joints of arthritic patients.

Both of these treatments have led to an increase in comfort and the preservation of tissue and cartilage in the patients

Arthritis is a condition in which the body’s joints become inflamed, swollen, and painful. While lifestyle choices and medication might improve symptoms of arthritis, there is currently no known cure.

Stem cell therapy, however, is being considered a useful option for managing arthritis. Stem cell therapy allows the damaged cartilage in the arthritic joints to be replaced with new, healthy cartilage. This can improve or eliminate symptoms of different kinds of arthritis.
