This protective fiber, known as myelin, helps to ensure healthy communication between nerve cells.<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p>When the myelin is damaged, nerve cells subsequently become damaged. This prevents your brain and nervous system from being able to effectively communicate. This communication difficulty is what causes many of the symptoms of multiple sclerosis.<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><h2><strong>Stem Cell Treatments for Multiple Sclerosis<\/strong><\/h2><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p>There are two types of stem cells that have been used for the treatment of MS.<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><ul><li><strong>Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). <\/strong>These are stem cells that can be obtained from human bone marrow, blood, and umbilical cord. These cells are able to adopt the role of blood cells and immune cells.<\/li><li><strong>Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). <\/strong>These stem cells are found in a number of different places in the body including bone marrow, skin, and fat. These cells are known to be especially useful for fighting inflammation and repairing damaged tissue.<\/li><\/ul><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p>Each of these cells has been used in a different way.<\/p><h3>&nbsp;<\/h3><h3><strong>HSCs for Multiple Sclerosis<\/strong><\/h3><p>People with extreme treatment-resistant MS have often reported positive results when using HSCs for Multiple Sclerosis. While there is some risk to this treatment, the majority of people &#8211; as many as 98% &#8211; respond favorably.<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p>The theory in this case is that HSC transplants will reboot the immune system. Ideally, this causes the immune system to stop attacking the nervous system. This can reduce symptoms of multiple sclerosis.<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><h3><strong>MSCs for Multiple Sclerosis<\/strong><\/h3><p>There are currently a number of animal studies being done on the use of MSCs for treating MS.
